Fue un columnista de periódicos, considerado uno de los fundadores del periodismo investigativo moderno. Ganó el premio Pulitzer en 1972 por su investigación en las decisiones secretas de la Policía por parte de EE.UU. hacia el conflicto indo-pakistaní en 1971.
