History
Fue general del Ejército de Chile y exjefe de la Dirección Nacional de Inteligencia (DINA), la policía secreta de Chile durante 1973 Y 1977. En 1995, fue declarado culpable del asesinato del diplomático chileno Orlando Letelier en Washington, DC, y sentenciado a siete años de prisión, que cumplió hasta 2001. Al momento de su muerte, Contreras cumplía 59 sentencias por un total de 529 años de prisión: prisión por secuestro, desaparición forzada y asesinato.
