En el año 1961 se convierte en el primer católico en asumir la presidencia de estados unidos y en 1963 es asesinado en Dallas Texas por Lee Harvey, quien le propino diversos disparos mientas circulaba en el coche presidencial. Su cónyuge fue Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis con la que tuvo a sus hijos John F. Kennedy Jr. ,Patrick Bouvier Kennedy y Caroline Kennedy
